The all new 2017 Ford F-150 Raptor won't hit dealers for awhile; same for the Focus RS, the Mustang Shelby GT350R, and the astounding GT. But what if we told you Ford will let you make your own, today? And what if we told you it would only cost you five bucks? And what, then, if we told you you'd need a 3D printer, and you'd never be able to drive, or even sit in, the resulting vehicle? Yeah, sorry about that.
Ford revealed today that it will let you download three-dimensional digital images of the Raptor, GT350R, Focus RS or ST, and Fiesta ST for just $4.99; the file for the Ford GT comes in a few days. Provided you've got a 3D printer at home, you can conjure your scale model from whatever material your rig is capable of printing, in whatever size you desire. If you haven't gotten around to outfitting your home with a 3D printer, you can always employ the services of your local makerspace—or buy a pre-printed plastic car direct from Ford for just $39.
Is it gimmicky? Well, yeah, in the same sort of cheeky, toyish way as the snap-together Raptor scale model Ford handed out at the truck's Detroit Auto Show unveiling. But if your desk was just crying out for a tiny Ford, and you've got access to a 3D printer, it's probably not the dumbest $5 you've ever spent.
